Timothy Beatley's primary teaching and research are in environmental planning and policy. In recent years much of his research and writing has been focused on the subject of sustainable communities and creative strategies by which cities and towns can fundamentally reduce their ecological footprints while at the same time becoming more livable and equitable. Dr. Beatley's most recently published books include Green Urbanism: Learning from European Cities, and Native to Nowhere: Sustaining Home and Community in a Global Age.
Dr. Beatley's speech was part of the 6th series of Reshaping Rochester lectures at Temple 'Brith Kodesh in Rochester, NY. Remarks were edited for time.
